About Otis Bulfinch
Storyteller, Collector, Preserver of Mountain Tales
The Storyteller
Otis Bulfinch emerged from the Ozark hills with a head full of stories and a determination to preserve the folklore of a vanishing America. Part historian, part fabulist, part heretic, Bulfinch collects tales from courthouse squares, church suppers, and back porches across southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas.
The Mission
This site preserves and reimagines Ozark folklore for the digital age. Here you'll find traditional tales collected by Vance Randolph, original stories in the mountain tradition, and the nearly-true chronicle of T. Allen McQuary, the Purple Knight of the Ozarks—a historical hoax so elaborate it required extensive documentation to unravel.
The Work
Author of "Pursuing Daisy Garfield" and contributor to "Mildred, Quit Hollering," Bulfinch writes from deep in Missouri hill country, where the line between truth and tale has always been pleasantly blurry.
