With the advent of AI, storytelling will necessarily undergo some kind of evolution, but no one knows exactly where this process will take us. As I write this, at least 10 AI generated songs have charted in the last year, according to Billboard. At the same time, there is a current movement to reject any medium that utilizes "AI slop." So, how does OtisBulfinch.com use artificially generated content?

First: all our folktales, novels, and serialized chapters are written by folklorists past and present. A cursory review of our website will reveal that many of our folktales are original and draw from folklore themes while never pretending to be traditional folktales themselves. These original folktales are also written by humans.

Second: These same folklorists are permitted to use AI to generate images appropriate for the stories they’ve written — usually OpenArt.ai but also ChatGPT and Midjourney. Authors are free to use whichever AI image generator they prefer.

Third: OtisBulfinch relies on Anthropic’s Claude.ai and Claude Code to build and edit the site. The interface between Claude and Claude Code is remarkably efficient and productive.

And here’s our fourth and final disclaimer: OtisBulfinch.com does use AI to research the historical context of The Purple Knight Chronicles, and several of the entries in the Historical Notes were written by Claude.ai. Indeed, The Purple Knight Chronicles is an extended meditation on truth telling, erotic fantasy, political propaganda, and technology in our own time and should be interpreted accordingly. The question our generation has to face is this: What does redemption look like in an age of illusion and pervasive sexual imagery? Consequently, the use of AI in The Purple Knight Chronicles is not incidental to the narrative but essential to its purpose.

Thank you for reading OtisBulfinch.com; we hope you enjoy our postmodern effort at Ozarks storytelling!
