How Kate Got a Husband

One time there was a fellow going with a girl named Kate, and he promised to marry her before the baby was borned. But then one day he seen a rich girl in town, so then he thought maybe it would be better to marry the rich girl. When Kate heard about this she dressed up in a cowhide with the hairy side out, and a black mask over her head, and two gravels under her tongue. When the fellow come down the lane Kate riz up out of the brush, and groaned. The fellow was scared something terrible. She says she is Old Scratch redhot from home, come to carry him off to Hell because he has broke his promise to marry Kate. He got down on his knees and begun to beg and blubber how he will marry Kate before the moon changes if they will give him another chance.

So next morning he come to Kate's house hollering for Christ's sake hurry up, we must go to town and get married. So that is what they done, and Kate never did tell how she fooled him until after the baby come. The fellow says he knowed it was Kate all the time, and the rich girl says good riddance and it serves the damn fool right. And Kate says maybe she can't be tablecloth, but she don't sure don't aim to be dishrag. So they lived happy ever after, just like other married folks.
